Some stories are meant to make you feel good. This one is meant to make you think. This candid memoir is about identity, mental health, family, work, judgment, and the experiences that shape who we become.
Sheldon Wist is an Alberta author whose writing is rooted in lived experience, family, hard work, and a willingness to look honestly at the past.
Raised near Brooks on a farm, Sheldon developed an early appreciation for independence and the value of doing things for yourself. His life later took him through music, education, travel, and the skilled trades, including 18 years working in Alberta’s oil sands as a journeyman electrician.
His experiences gave him a broad view of people and the worlds they inhabit. They also taught him something he carries into his writing: you cannot understand a person by looking at only one part of their life.
Sheldon writes openly about mental health, stigma, relationships, identity, and the realities that exist behind public perception. He does not write to present himself as a hero or to ask readers for sympathy.
For Sheldon, writing is not about creating a perfect version of the past. It is about telling the story as honestly as he can.
THE AUTHOR’S APPROACH
Honesty over image.
Real life does not need to be polished to have value.
People over labels.
No diagnosis, mistake, or difficult chapter can define an entire person.
Experience over easy answers.
Some lessons are complicated. Some questions remain open.
Story over judgment.
Understanding begins when we are willing to hear the whole story.
